I became a registered nurse at a time when I had struggled with my own health issues and had lost a family member to cancer. Having a degree in interior design and years of experience creating environments, I wanted to design my life around health and wellness, so I changed careers and became a nurse. In providing patient care on a medical-telemetry unit I recognized the gap in health care regarding patient education, lifestyle, and chronic stress. As a result, I became a Certified Integrative Health Coach through Duke Integrative Medicine. The foundation of that program was a process rooted in mindfulness by which I could support others to create a life of health, purpose, and meaning. It also encompassed the creative design process, and one of my best strengths, listening. As I gained experience coaching for employee wellness programs, I experienced the power that culture can have on wellness.
I continue to advance my clinical knowledge with training in integrative and functional medicine, which tend to favor lifestyle interventions and look deeper into root-cause. Health coaching is a complement to these approaches in that it provides foundational support for lifestyle modification. Having forged my own way with experience in behavior change, the creative design process, and healthcare, I have learned to support clients to implement medical recommendations and achieve goals, which often takes time, organization, and an understanding of the system to be successful. Self-awareness and mind-body principles are also integral to this process.
A couple years ago, I re-met my fifth-grade crush. Cancer had led us both on a quest and our paths crossed again after over 25 years. He is a thriver with a rare form of brain cancer, primary CNS lympoma (PCNSL). Over the past year, we have navigated through treatment and a stem cell transplant at a top-rated cancer center in an unfamiliar city. I have gained experience in exploring conventional and integrative treatment options where I have become adept at managing the complexities of this process, along with an awareness of the many challenges. This includes seeking a strong team of providers, communicating a complex history to provide the most benefit during consultations, and understanding insurance considerations. Homecare, including home-cooked, plant-based meals, toxin reduction, and design that functions and inspires have become a significant piece of this journey.
In my journey, mind-body activities, such as crafting with my hands, dance, yoga, and self-defense have been influential. My top VIA Character Strength is “Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence.”
Continued Education, Certifications, and Work Experience
Becoming a Board Certified Nurse Coach (NC-BC) and Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC) has furthered my health coaching education. In September 2017, I was in the first group of health coaches to pass the board certification exam organized by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). I am working towards IFM Certification and have worked for Genova Diagnostics as a Medical Education Specialist. I have gained experience in health coaching curriculum development, implementation of ICHWC core competencies, instruction, and mentor coaching with FMCA and Emory Continuing Education Health Coaching Programs. Additionally, I provide coaching education and health and wellness certification exam prep courses through Next In Coaching Academy (NICA). NICA is an NBHWC- approved continuing education provider.
In August 2018, I started The Ohio State University Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program. The OSU College of Nursing has a commitment to wellness, innovation, and evidenced-based practice, which continues to enhance and build upon the experience I have already gained.
